Are playgrounds safe for my kids?

Growing up in a neighborhood, you typically tend to see a playground around the area, or at the very least, have gone to one once in your childhood. Now, as you grow older, you begin to acknowledge just what it is about the playground that makes it so amusing to you. Never worrying about the precautions or the other children playing around you as well! However, as kids do grow older, they might just one day consider the playground they've been playing at all their lives to be a little too safe.

We've all seen and used different types of playgrounds over the course of our childhood. From the simple swing set to the elaborate fun center we have likely used many of varieties of playgrounds and playground equipment that keep children active and having fun. Here we will explore what playgrounds have to offer and the different types of playground that are available to our children today.

Dana Point tide pools are a designated Marine Protected Area (MPA) – State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) – accessible from the beaches and trails surrounding the Ocean Institute. Tide pools are the most amazing little universes to me. I have fond memories tidepooling as a child and I think that’s why I’m so conscious about protecting and conserving them.

Steve Ambriz Memorial Park in Orange features a large area dedicated to play with a little something for everyone. With two standard play structures and a large, abstract climb-on structure in the center, this place keeps my kids happily running from place to place for a very long time. There are ride-ons and plenty of swings to boot!

Heritage Park in Tustin

Heritage Park is easy to miss because its quiet shaded playground is nestled back away from the street.

Location: Located on Tustin Ranch Road between Bryan Ave and Irvine Blvd. From the 5 freeway exit at Tustin Ranch Road. Follow Tustin Ranch Road past the Auto Center and the park will be on your right. (Address: 2350 Kinsman Circle, Tustin).

Peachwood Park in Lake Forest

Peachwood Park in Lake Forest is a small playground hidden in a neighborhood off Trabuco Road. It’s not even on Google’s map. It’s very near Tamarisk Park and can sometimes be confused with Tamarisk, but it’s smaller and has updated equipment.

Location: From I-5, drive towards the foothills on Lake Forest Drive. Turn left on Trabuco Road and get ready to make an immediate right onto Peachwood. The playground is ahead on the right. Parking is on the street.

Because the majority of playground injuries are due to falls from equipment, injury prevention efforts are primarily directed at reducing the likelihood of a child falling and reducing the likelihood of a severe injury if the child does fall. In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American National Standards Institute have created a Standardized Document and Training System for certification of Playground Safety Inspectors. These regulations are nationwide and provide a basis for safe playground installation and maintenance practices.
